India Retirement Index Study (IRIS), to decode
the retirement preparedness of Urban India

IRIS is a proprietary primary research undertaken yearly by Max Life Insurance in partnership with Kantar. Started in 2020, IRIS is now in its 4th year. IRIS assesses the levels of preparedness among urban Indians to lead a secure retirement life--across fronts of financial, emotional, and health aspects, through a battery of questions.

IRIS is a composite score that measures retirement preparedness across Finance, Health, and Emotional sub-indices.

Financial Preparedness Index that measures the degree to which Indians feel financially secure and prepared for their retirement life on a scale of 0 to 100. Health Preparedness Indices measures the degree to which Indians feel secure about their health and fitness for their retirement life on a scale of 0 to 100 and Emotional Preparedness Index that measures the degree to which Indians feel secure about support from family and society for emotional, social and financial needs for their retirement life on a scale of 0 to 100.

IRIS is a comprehensive, PAN-India research covering 28 cities (including 6 Metros, 12 Tier 1 cities, and 10 tier 2 cities), covering males and females between ages 25-65 years. This year, we have included new cohorts like Double Income No Kids (DINKs) and Gig workers to the IRIS sample.

IRIS evaluates India's readiness for a financially independent and healthy retirement. It identifies gaps in planning, raising awareness about the need for early preparation. The study helps guide individuals, policymakers, and institutions toward better retirement strategies.
